Hamilton Ontario to Host 2019 World Junior Lacrosse Championship

Canadian Lacrosse League Awards 2019 IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship to Hamilton Lacrosse Association, City of Hamilton

HAMILTON, ON – The world’s best junior-aged box lacrosse players will be competing for gold at the 2019 IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship from August 6-11, 2019 in Hamilton, ON at FirstOntario Centre. 

International Indoor Junior Lacrosse (IIJL), in partnership with the Canadian Lacrosse League (CLL), has awarded the 4th edition of the international tournament to the Hamilton Lacrosse Association and the City of Hamilton, in partnership with Tourism Hamilton. 

“While hosted in Hamilton, the strategic plan developed with the Hamilton Lacrosse Association is regional with potential positive impact extending to other minor lacrosse associations beyond the host-city,” said Chris Fox, executive director, Canadian Lacrosse League. “We are confident in this committee’s ability to successfully execute on the collective vision for the 2019 IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship, and we look forward to working with them to ensure we leave a lasting legacy in Hamilton and across the region that helps us continue to grow and develop the game from the grassroots to major junior levels.” 

Leading the committee are co-chairs Greg Gillis, president of the Hamilton Lacrosse Association and Chris Fox, executive director of the Canadian Lacrosse League. 

“The host committee is thrilled to bring the highest level of international junior lacrosse to the City of Hamilton. We appreciate the support of Tourism Hamilton and the Canadian Lacrosse League who have worked together to successfully bringing this event to Hamilton,” said Greg Gillis, co-chair of the 2019 IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship host-committee. 

The IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship is a legacy event in Canada establishing the foundation for the development of major junior lacrosse across the country. 

The 2019 World Junior Lacrosse Championship will be hosted at the FirstOntario Centre, home of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Hamilton Bulldogs and original home of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) Toronto Rock, then known then as the Ontario Raiders. 

“We are delighted to be selected to host the World Junior Lacrosse Championship here in Hamilton,” said Carrie Brooks-Joiner, Manager Tourism & Events, Tourism & Culture Division, City of Hamilton. “This is a very exciting opportunity for our community and we look forward to extending a warm Hamilton welcome and experience for participants from around the world in 2019.” 

Additional legacy plans for the potential profits of the event will provide for grassroots lacrosse program support in Hamilton and across the region, as well as the CLL. A portion of the profits will also be used by the IIJL to grow the game internationally.
