Name Amendment to Founding Member Nation

In the spirit of reconciliation, International Indoor Junior Lacrosse (IIJL) will respect the wishes of founding Member Nation Iroquois, and recognize the "People of the Longhouse" as they recognize themselves, the Haudenosaunee

"The name 'Iroquois' was given to us," said Gewas Schindler, founding IIJL Member Nation Chair Haudenosaunee. "Our nation, our confederacy, our people are the Haudenosaunee. The Haudenosaunee are the founders of the original game of dewaaogajihgwae - the spider’s web and dehontsigwaehs - bumping hips, known today as the game of  lacrosse." Schindler added. The Haudenosaunee confederacy consists of the following nations; Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, and Tuscarora Nations.

Moving forward the Haudenosaunee will be recognized as such at all IIJL events, including but not limited to the IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship, IIJL World U17 Lacrosse Championship, and IIJL North American Cup Series

"As we move forward and welcome other Indigenous North American Nations to participate in IIJL events it's important that we recognize each Nation as they recognize themselves." said Chris Fox, founding IIJL Member Nation Chair Canada. "Using proper titles and definitions provides us with an opportunity to educate the lacrosse community about the languages and traditions of Indigenous people from different Nations." Fox added.

"We are very thankful to be working with an organization that values the importance of their traditions and look forward to helping amplify the voice of the Haudenosaunee." Said Graham D'Alvia, founding IIJL Member Nation Chair United States.

Now recognized as Haudenosaunee, the three-letter country abbreviation will be HAU and used where applicable.
